GERALD COURTS SUCCESS IN THE MUSIC WORLD
Report: Eamon Timmins
CORK city solicitor Gerald O’Flynn this week enjoys the unique distinction of being the only member of the city’s legal profession who also has a song in the Irish charts.
And Gerald makes no secret of the fact that he’s chuffed at the success of his debut double A-sided single – which this week re-entered the Irish charts at No. 16.
But the writer of middle of the road romantic love songs is not satisfied to be merely a solicitor/singer/songwriter. Following the success of the debut Hush Little Baby, he has formed a band and is planning tours of Ireland, Britain and America next year.
“I’m not the type of guy who goes around pubs playing for 30 Pounds a night,” he explains. “If I am going to do it at all, I am going to do it for the top band. We want to be the best band in the country.”
He has already begun rehearsals with that band, which includes country star Ray Lynam on acoustic guitar. Following rehearsals they will work on their first album, which is due for release in February or March.
An indication of his commitment to being the best is the debut single which features Lynham on acoustic guitar and top session player Eoghan O’Neill on bass. The sound engineer on the production was Philip Begley, who also worked on all Daniel O’Donnell’s albums. The album and publicity photographs were taken by top fashion photographer Tom Higgins.
The single has received considerable air-time on RTE and veteran Montrose disc jockey Larry Gogan described it as the best double A-sided single he has heard.
The difference between life as as solicitor, with his own practice on Camden Quay, and life as a solicitor, with his own practice on Camden Quay, and life as a musician are considerable. “But I think they complement each other,” Gerald commented.
When he hears off on the three-week tour of the United States next year, it will be the same as going on holidays, as far as work is concerned. “Instead of three weeks in the Canaries, I’m going off to America”, he said.
